Enjoying the quiet season

Posted 10-23-2008 at 12:50 PM by dsobotta

The weather is absolutely stunning along the Southern Outer Banks right now. It has cooled off this week, but the ex-Canadian in me would have a hard time complaining about temperatures in the sixties in late October.

Last week we were in shorts. Yesterday when we went fishing, a stiff breeze from the north made our hooded sweat shirts feel pretty good.

Still this is a great time of year for fishing and enjoying the water. The best of the fishing still is to come I am told, but we are catching enough to have lots of fun.

My partner, Dean and I, have caught everything from Bluefish to this Yellow Sea Bass that I caught yesterday.

He was only in the cooler a few seconds yesterday while I got the hook out and took his picture.

Fishing is especially neat when you do in gorgeous surroundings. The first place we fished yesterday was near Swansboro. As we idled into the area, we were surprised to see over thirty White Herons surrounding a marsh area.

That is the first time that I have ever seen that many Herons in one spot. In their defensel they were spread out around the marsh.

One of the good things about fishing where we fish is that getting there does not take long, and we can be home and on the boat lift in ten minutes.

Fishing becomes just something we do when we have some time not something that takes over a whole day. That makes it a lot more palatable to my wife.

It is a pretty special time of year. As I sit here writing, I am looking out over the White Oak River which has become one of my favorite spots over the last couple of years.

Our cat is asleep by the open window which gives me some fresh air which helps with the challengie of writing when I would like to join the cat for a nap.

His nap in the sun reminds me that this is the time of year to step back and enjoy life here on the coast. We are almost through the storm season. We have survived the tourist season, and fortunately it does not cost a lot to heat our homes.

We have a lot to be thankful for, and I am glad that I am living on North Carolina's coast.

There is plenty of inexpensive fun down here as this Carteret County web site shows.

Times might be tough all over, a blue sky, sunshine, and gorgeous scenery help keep me positive.
