Mt. Rushmore
We went to Mt. Rushmore recently...
It's a great place to play the license plate game. Have you ever done that? Where you try to find all 50 license plates, plus any extras like Guam or Canadian provinces, etc... Just a few passes down the parking lot gets you most all you need. It's a cool thing, the national and international connectedness found at Mt. Rushmore.
A little quiz for you... (just off the top of your head... no asking that family member in the kitchen, or that coworker in the cubicle next to you, and don't you dare look online... until after you're done. I'll post answers (especially to 2nd question) on Wednesday...)
Do you know the names of the 4 presidents carved out of the mountain?
And can you tell me which one of those may not have become president if his father (who was about 8 years old at the time) had been successfully carried off (kidnapped) by Native Americans? (And if the almost-victim's older brother hadn't been such a good shot... )

Beautiful shots! We went to Mt. Rushmore about this same time, although we went Memorial Day Weekend...
Did you go to the Reptile Museum or Bear Country while you were in the area? I love those two places! So much fun

We did! We had family visiting from Denver so we showed them the sights... that Bear Country USA was incredible. We were laughing so hard at one point I was crying. One bear coming up behind us, another not getting out of the way in front (just waddling along...) it was hilarious. So cool really. And those babies... did you see that little runt, the light brown one? Too adorable. And I really love the reptile gardens. It was raining when we went though so the very old turtles were hiding and we didn't get to see the snake show or them feed the gators. We'll have to go back. So much to do in the Rapid City area... Glad you got to go too.

I am glad you got to see the sites around the area... Someone told me I need to go to the Flinstone Village too.. we didn't get to go when we were there...
That is too funny about the bears! Boy they are cute, I kept laughing at one that was pacing back and forth... Our daughter 2 at the time was mesmerized by the bears! The babies are so cute, I loved watching the baby bears
The grizzlies were a site to see too! wow were they incredible.
That is too bad it was raining at Reptile Gardens... maybe next time you go you can see a few shows. It is fun...

FedupWNY at least you have the Statue of Liberty and oh so many cool sites out on the east coast... especially for history buffs. I love the east (my mom's from Boston, my dad from tough Philly).
I bet you can still remember those presidents....

The Statue of Liberty is some 450 miles from where I am, having lived in the State of New York, I've never been to see it (I'm on the East coast of Lake Erie). Ah, but Niagara Falls is less than half an hour away.

Mt. Rushmore quiz answers
It's the blossoming teacher in me, I can't help asking questions... Thanks to GCSTroop and coosjoaquin (on the right brain/left brain thread) for taking a go at this, and anyone else who thought about it but didn't post... (my patriotic question for the week)
1... The presidents carved into Mt. Rushmore, from left to right are:
1) George Washington (1st president)
2) Thomas Jefferson (3rd president)
3) Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt (26th president)
4) Abraham Lincoln (16th president)
2... It was Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas, who was almost either killed or carried off by Indians (Native Americans). He was around 8 years old at the time. Young Thomas was working outside with his father (Abraham Lincoln, Sr.) mending a fence I think. His 2 older brothers were working in a nearby field. This was in Kentucky. Their first warning of an ambush was when they heard a shot and saw their father drop. The oldest son (Mordecai, age 15) ran for the gun, while the 2nd oldest ran to get help. Just as Thomas was either about to be carried off or killed, Mordecai, shooting from a hole in the loft, shot and killed the Indian who had grabbed him. Thomas dropped to the ground and ran for his life. Mordecai continued shooting and when neighboring settlers arrived on the scene to help, the Indians ran off. Their father, Abraham Lincoln, Sr. was dead. That was a tough time to live in, for both sides... But that's the story...
