Avoiding foreclosure

Posted 03-28-2010 at 09:07 PM by Tish Thompson

For one reason or another, many homeowners are underwater on their mortgages. Maybe the main wage earner lost his/her job, maybe there was a divorce, or even injury or illness. Rather than ask for help, many of these folks are suffering in silence because they're afraid no one will understand or care. Doing nothing is the absolute worst option because you will definitely lose your home.

If you find yourself in a situation where you could end up losing your home, seek help. Some suggestions on who you need to speak with: your tax advisor. He or she can tell you about the consequences of selling your home for less than what you owe the bank. This is also known as a short sale. A bankruptcy attorney will tell you if it's possible to resolve your problems through bankruptcy. Your lender may be able to modify your loan in order to make your payments affordable. A real estate professional can advise of current market conditions and help get your house sold as quickly as possible.
