Jatropha Bean is FUEL in India, America Why Not?

Posted 06-22-2008 at 05:47 PM by Summering

I understand from CNN today that we do have a Jatropha Bean farm out West. As a matter of fact a bus load of financiers took a ride out there to see this alternative fuel.
Jatroph, in India, is the green seed of change.
This plant produces very large green seeds, that when processed as in India..... it becomes a fuel!
India took 13 million acres of wasteland and is using it for Jatropha production.........
Why is it that so many countries are ahead of us in wise future thinking and production.
This bean was researched in Germany at the Hoheheim University. To co-relate this fuel to the automobile.
An entire village in India works to raise this "wonder crop".............
Between this and Americas huge Soy crops, we need to get working on a green solution to our fuel problems. We must not rely on Saudi Arabia and other countries and be at their mercy........I know we are a better country then that.
How about these Pod like cars that do 230 miles per gallon.......It might be a bit scary at first...so, so, small. But, look at that miles per gallon. Wow!
All I know is the name Jatropha may seem strange to us now........but it will be on the lips of our children and grandchildren if America acts smart.

I know more then "myself" are worried about our fuel situation...... I am so surprised it is quiet here.
It alarms me that we will pay over $4.00 for gas and then just move on to another day and another dollar.
When there was the Odd/Even gas lines.......spreading out and about for miles from the gas stations.....that was the time to get started. Over thirty five years ago!!
We are a smart country that didn't act very smart at all.....Why are we so far behind other countries with biofuels?
During the gas line fiasco we were lucky to have two cars of each.........an odd and an even plate. I would bundle up the babies and at 5AM go get on line. This way, hubby wouldn't have to do it before trying to get to work on time. Rumor was that there were barges just parked out in the ocean..........I really believed that.
We needed to work on this problem way back then.
Shouldn't we depend on ourselves? We go begging for fuels from foreign countries, some of which don't like our nation at all.
I was watching Hannity last night talking about a desolate area in Alaska........a dead area, with temps below 20. This area ,if drilled in, could give America 1 million barrels a day of oil.......Congressman Nunes went there to see this location . He had to board a special plane for that type of environment. He swears by the fact that his is "dead" area..........There are no animals, or plants there to harm.
I think we would not hurt Alaska by drilling there, and it will help America.
Right now at this point, if oil were found under my home.......I'd give it up for the good of all.
Alaska, I love your beauty..........but.........its time to push the environmentalist aside and let the oil flow.

Here, Here Summering! I missed the story about Jatropha, I'll have to look that up. I am absolutely worried about our fuel situation. I agree that we should drill in Alaska, as well as finding and adapting other solutions that can reduce or diminish our dependence on foreign oil.

Ok, Well gosh I feel better.........I thought everyone were just merrily riding along..( Pun intended)........Its ok, Its ok........
    Well, it just isn't really........
America needs to work on new fuels.....we need our "own"........ I had never heard of this bean........in fact the next day I went to CNN to check out the story and it wasn't even on there.......Why Not?
There is a small farm out west doing this.....growing these beans. However.....
I sincerely feel that Alaska is the answer.
They can give up that small part of land, its not all that large so I am hearing........out where no one will ever live, or want to live......no plant or animal either. Lets do it and do it now..........Its about 35 years past when I hoped we'd start, but better late then never.

Hi Summering...I am also glad you brought this up. More people need to start talking about it. Here are a couple of things I'm thinking about. I hope I don't come off as disagreeable...i think its important that we all start brainstorming to solve this...

Alaska...here is why I have a problem with it...you mention we could get 1 million barrels a day. OK...that sounds like a lot...but keep in mind that we currently use about 25 million barrels a day? So Alaska would not make us free of middle east reliance on oil. Also, what should be evident to all of us is that oil is a finite resource. We can not go on forever like this. How many who want to drill in Alaska as an answer, are really thinking of future generations? That's who we really need to be concerned about. When the generations before me decided to build this oil infrastructure they knew it would not last forever. One of big five oil companies has already admitted that oil has peaked. Another says oil will peak around 2015. Another say peak is in 2030. No matter how you look at it, it's very bad news. We can not leave this to the infants being born now to solve. Many from my generation (I am 26) resent the fact that the generations before use did not care more about the world they would one day hand to us.

Drilling in Alaska may provide us a little more oil for now, but all it would do is prolong the inevitable collapse of the oil industry. And what is the point of that? So, let's get on with this. We are stewards of this planet and it is time to stop thinking like we are the only humans that will ever need these resources again. It is not ours to waste. Do you wonder if the way we have treated the planet has anything to do with why so many people have died recently in weather related tragedies? Can we collectively handle any more karma like that on our consciences?

The bean thing is interesting. I had not heard about it. There are farmers here in Honesdale who are powering their tractors with biofuels and heating their barns with methane from cow manure. These are pockets of the future. But the main message is that everyone needs to be coming up with their own creative solutions. We can not rely on the government for this because unfortunately I do not think they truly want to fix this problem for us right now. Eventually when they've sucked all they can out of easy oil energy, someone will come along, but that will be too late for a lot of us unless we are super wealthy.

I am part of a committe for northern wayne county that is working on developing a renewable energy infrastructure for our community. If you want to start something like this for your community let me know and I can tell you more about what we're doing.

    peace

Gosh MermanMike I think you should tell us a bit more about your energy infrastructure.........Whats the miracle going on up in Wayne County? Please let America know ...........( or just me)
I'm not a fan of oil, just a real dirty, grimey fuel........
But, it would have been nice if our country tried to fix the problem when we had odd/even gas lines. Now we are up to the wire and into a mess. Other countries blackmailing us with high prices and turning away.
I thought we were a much more proud country.

I loved going into NYC the last few times........I had been so use to the smell of the fuel coming from the buses..........Wow, no smell.........battery powered, electric buses. All those fumes gone!!! Someone followed the right path for NY.

Now, here we stand...........gas going sky high......It has ,and will ,affect everything in our life.

The Bean story came on CNN, although looking for it later on line ( CNN) I could not find it. It showed the financiers getting off of a bus out West to see one of these farms. The story spoke of India and how it ( the bean)is helping them. What makes India smarter then us?
Or do they play less games, and know how to live off of their own land. It seems they don't depend on foreign countries like we do.
Its a gosh ugly plant........huge green leaves.......but there in the mist is the bean, that could be a windfall to our farmers. To US!!
But, it is awfully quiet in the News here......They did say it would be " on the lips of our children and grandkids" but........hummm....noone is talking here , not a word spoken since then.........Jatropha Bean, where are you?

Hey Summering...there are pockets of the future all around the country I think...you don't hear about them though...I won't dwell on my conspiracy theories about the media here though

There are farmers all over the poconos using their manure for biofuel in their tractors and to heat their greenhouses. There are people in california who have highly efficient electric cars that hardly require any maintenance and require zero fuel (see movie Who Kill the Electric Car?). If you stick to the mainstream, all you will see is people going in and out of big box parking lots complaining about gas prices.
Ya know the native americans had this idea...that whenever a decision was going to be made that would affect the earth, that a committee of seven elders would gather to discuss how the decision would affect the next seven generations of native american. If it would adversely affect any of them, they would not move forward. Where is that concern for our future generations in the mainstream? It seems to me like all most people care about is making their lives easier...they want to be as entertained as possible and not to have to think about the hard stuff. Well, that's the different between here and India, as I see it.

In my group, I'll give you the short version, we are focused in two ways--macro and micro. On the macro we are holding public forums to discuss different renewable enegry topics. First is Wind, then water conservation, geothermal, hydro power, forest fuels, solar, etc. We will have experts from Penn State and Penn Future, along with individuals who have made these (expensive) adjustments to their homes and farms. There will also be information from suppliers and zoning officers.

On the micro scale we are holding weekly workshops teaching people how to live more simply and rely on the land. Well, not even rely, but how to be good stewards of the land, because if we treat our mother well she will care for us for a long time. We are discussing organic gardening, rain barrels, how to create soil and compost, vermiculture, lots of different fun things. One of my organic farmer friends in Damascus will be hosting these seminars at her farm where she free ranges chickens and has a CSA for fruits and veggies.
I think the answer is number one learning how to live with less...then getting very creative.

That is so interesting MM...........Wow, you are dealing with great ideas and our future. Proud of you........
But this worries me because I have always heard about the man who did build the "car that ran on water"...
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...id feed&hl=en
Stan Meyer built that car and it ran entirely on water. 100 mi to the gallon. Amazing! Well, What happened to this earth changing inventor? The Edison, or should I say Ford of our time!
He was poisoned and died in 1998. Later that week all his equipment and the car he created was stolen.
Just a coincidence, I think not........
Stan Meyer spoke repeatably about being threatened by the oil companies, but he refused to bow to their wishes........
One other man who worked in this field was bought out for millions ( or perhaps it was a million at the time)
Someone coming up with an invention to rid us of gas and oil consumption........should see the video above and be extremely careful.
Money and Greed........reins over the well-being of our mankind.

One counter arguement is that to fill up a single 25 gallon tank with Ethanol or Bio-Diesel from The Bean, Corn, etc. takes enough
input-energy to feed 1 person in a starving country for 1 year.

I just got through listening to The Diane Rhem show, with
Cathy Zoi, CEO of the Alliance for Climate Protection (Al Gore)

    EeeeGgggAaaaDdddSsss.....
15 minutes on CO2 sequestration technologies for coal ???
15 minutes on more drilling ???
15 minutes on Transmission Line problems related to large Solar/Wind plants ?
15 minutes on Big Government and Big Corporation Investment ???

This is the same repeat, over and over and over again.

4EverGreen13 Television show is for EACH INDIVIDUAL CITIZEN to
    COMPLETELY ENERGY REMODEL

We are simply desperate to just ADD another 15 minutes of
INFORMED DEBATE about what each individual can do
BESIDES 'write their congressperson' or 'change their light bulbs'.

There is no more important feed-back than yours !!!!!!

IF the show sucks, we have got to know NOW !!!!

Please, it has taken 3 months to put the pilot together and
