Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Product Makers Love Messing With Our Minds

Posted 02-13-2010 at 06:10 PM by case44

For my edification and culinary enjoyment, there is nothing like lasagna hot from the oven. It starts out frozen when the box is opened, but lately, something's gotten very peculiar and mysterious about how the Italian delight gets made.

You see, we always read the labels from the backs of packages and follow the instructions given when cooking. It seems the last four or five boxes of frozen lasagna have offered cooking instructions that were different each time. I won't name the brand, but it's a respected one. But the cooking instructions have been such that the makers of these products can't make up their minds as to how said lasagna will be cooked. I kid you not.

One time, I believe it was:

Do not remove cover, cook 50 minutes at 325 degrees, remove cover, cook 25 additional minutes.

Another time:

Remove cover, cook for 55 minutes at 350 degrees.

Another time:

Do not remove cover, cook 35 minutes at 325 degrees, remove cover, cook additional 45 minutes.

And again:

Do not remove cover, cook 55 minutes at 350, remove cover, cook additional 20 minutes.

Yes, my dear friends, this is how food makers and processors make their livings: by messing with the minds of kitchen extraordinaires everywhere. So, I wonder what it will be next time, 60 minutes at 400? 55 minutes covered, 30 uncovered at 300? Sounds hysterical, dudnit? Whichever one I get, it will still turn out good and delicious, to be served with the most savory cheese toast in the world. I can't wait!

I know the feeling. That experience also has happened with some microwave foods that I've had, so I definitely share your "pain".
