Bald Eagles

I’ve been fascinated with bald eagles ever since I was a small child and saw pictures of them in books. Where and when I grew up along the Alabama Gulf Coast there were no bald eagles. At that time, their numbers had declined to the point of near extinction in North America due to the effects of DDT usage by humans. It wasn’t until I had grown children of my own that I was able to see a bald eagle again soar in the skies of southwest Alabama.
A couple of days after arriving in Juneau I went for a walk early in the morning on the walking trail through the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge. In that hour long walk I counted 10 bald eagles, I don’t think I took my finger off of the shutter release button on my camera during the entire walk!

Beautiful pictures. With work in a photoshop, I bet you could make an awesome patriotic pic to share in the photography forum.

Fantastic photos. I too love the bald eagle. I was never so thrilled as I was when I got to move to the newest HS in the district where I taught, and our mascot was the Screamin' Eagle. I had two wonderful eagle puppets I kept on my desk, and sometimes when I had had enough of the kids, I would slip one of the puppets on -- either the hand puppet, or the finger puppet (so cute, so small) and would say, "Enough! Talk to the eagle. . ."

Wow. What a photographer you are. I may have accidentally pressed the excellent vote 3 times in my effort to make sure my 1st attempt went through.
On a personal note. My husband and his father always loved bald eagles, would look for them in western, CO together. My husband's father passed last year (only in his 50s) and on our way home from the funeral it was the strangest thing. Over the course of the drive back home we saw 5 bald eagles, more than we'd ever seen before on that drive. Kind of like his dad was thinking of him...

Redhawk,
About a year and a half ago I was working on a project in Mobile, Alabama. Driving from the eastern shore to Mobile one morning, on the interstate, I spotted two bald eagles sitting on a log in the middle of the bay. If it were not for morning traffic I would have stopped to take a picture or two. I looked for them from that day on but never did see them again. It was, like your pictures show, something to behold. With the morning light on the bay, almost 'highlighting' them, I regret not stopping. No such sightings since. Carpe diem, huh?Posted 07-26-2008 at 08:52 PM by Bulldawgfan -
You are correct Bulldawg and I do attempt to “seize the day” with my photography because the shots that are missed will never be achievable in exactly the same way again. When I lived in south Alabama I had a bumper sticker that read “CAUTION I BRAKE for Eagles, Hawks, and other birds”! I would pull over and stop anytime I spotted a Hawk, Kestrel, Owl or Eagle etc . . .!

Great photos. You must have a nice camera. Some of these don't even look real. Very Nice!

Thank you stevegayle I'm glad you liked the photos. I use a Nikon D80 with a 70-300mm zoom lens for most of my photographs.
