Connecting with God and Nature

Posted 10-09-2008 at 11:00 AM by JoshB

It all started on a cool Autumn morning. The sound of an alarm clock on a vacation wasn’t too enticing, but I knew today I was going to traverse some of the most beautiful land in the country. So as many of my mornings go I slowly woke up and then decided to go down stairs to take a shower and eat some cereal. I wanted to eat light so I wouldn’t be regretting it later when I’m out in the middle of no where and having no restrooms available.
After packing the truck with my sandwiches and lunch items I was off to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I’ve been to many states, but never Michigan. I was excited to be heading off to another state. My destination in the U.P. was Ontonagon and Silver City, as they both are both located in the foothills of the Porcupine Mountains. Mountains in Michigan? You bet, believe it or not I wasn’t aware of them until earlier this year and ever since I’ve had an itch to see some mountains in the Midwest…
I figured I have nine days to relax at the cabin and I could spend one doing some hiking and collecting rocks at Lake Superior. So I headed out of Minocqua and went towards the Michigan state line… It took me about 45 minutes or so to get to the state line. Once I crossed the state line I was happy to be in another state. I knew I had about another hour and fifteen minutes till I was at the mountains. As I headed farther north I was able to relax and enjoy the fall colors along the highways and the lakes dotted on the landscape.
I knew I was close when I could see some beautiful mountain peaks full of fall colors. This was truly a place I had never been before. I could see Lake Superior over the crest of another hill… I was built up with anticipation… I was so glad to be out of the daily rat race and able to restore the soul and just relax! The site of the lake was an indicator that I was only ten minutes away. When I arrived in Silver City, Michigan I was officially at Lake Superior.
After I recollected my self from all the excitement of being here I made it to the visitor center where I was fed wealth’s of information. After the visitor center I went to a parking area where I was able to eat my lunch… By now I was very hungry. I finally had all my belongings and I headed for Summit Peak. The hike wasn’t very strenuous, but it did feel like it was taking forever. I tell you what when I made it to the first observation deck I was alone right there with a view of the Lake Superior and the Porcupine Mountains. The feeling I had was indescribable. I knew I was at peace, a feeling I hadn’t had in a long time.
After I enjoyed some awesome views from the observation tower I headed to Summit Peak which took around another twenty minutes. As I made the final steps at Summit Peak I was overtaken by strong feeling, I wasn’t sure if it was nature or God, or both!
All’s I know is that when I was at Summit peak I had a feeling that was similar to the observation deck. I was in heaven, well close enough to it.

After all the awesome views I headed back to the truck. Leaving that area was tough since it was so relaxing and untouched by society. After I left the trail it was another half an hour to Lake of the Clouds… The hike at Lake of the Clouds was nothing compared to the Summit Peak Trail. I don’t know if the view at Lake of the Clouds was any better than Summit Peak. All I do know is that Lake of the Clouds was a lot more busy. The sound of a camera every ten seconds made me miss my Summit Peak Serenity.

By the time all this was done the day was almost over and I was able to leave with a lot less stress and a lot of nice pictures and memories that I will never forget… From the views to the beach at Lake Superior, I’ll be back again.
