Thought of moving to maine need help/opinions

Posted 01-20-2010 at 08:27 AM by gettingoutofNH

So after reading everyone else posts about whether or not moving to portland/surrounding areas would be a good idea, i have decided to create an account to try and find out whether it would be a good idea. So my backstory is that my girlfriend and I along with our recently born little girl (shes 2 months) were thinking of both doing a work transfer and moving to maine. Also with us would be a good friend of ours who is going back to school but also has a lot of carpentry and gen. construction experience. Our thoughts are moving possibly outside of portland to the gorham area but would like to know how the school area is for a child. My friend would be going to either southern maine tech or university of southern maine. As a new englander my entire life the weather is not an issue for all of us. And also if the work transfers go through as planned the move would be in about 5 months so this wouldnt be a fly by the moment choice. So my questions would be...

* How is downtown portland for raising a child?

* How is the school district surrounding portland?

* Is the nightlife more of a live music and bar scene or a club scene?

* If with jobs lined up and housing cost including util. being around 1600 mo, would 5 or 6k saved be enough?

Lastly i would like to inform you that my gf and i have a combined income of 46k a year, and our potential roomate is well enough off that his share of the rent would not be an issue. Also our expenses would go up only 200$ a month from where we are now as a decent apartment complex in nashua nh runs over 1000mo. Thank you and hope to here from all.

    Moving to Maine

I would say your income will not be enough to live near portland, the cost of living in Maine is very high, much higher than the nat. avg. I moved here from PA and was shocked by the high cost of living in a place that has roads you can't drive on, PD that would not be able to direct traffic in most states, I just don't get the cost, the taxes are out of site on homes, and wait till you register your car, plan on needing 2,000 just to get a plate. I have had enough and going back to PA .
