So There Is A Sense Of Sociological Justice After All...

Posted 01-07-2010 at 01:30 PM by GCSTroop

For anyone who has never heard of 4chan, it can be considered one of the deepest and darkest corners of the internet. It is the place in which some of the largest hacking plots, internet spoofs, virus propagations, and massive 'denial of service' attacks come to life. Wired magazine has written articles about it describing it as the "dark underbelly of the internet," and has even written about a world famous hacker whose eluded police for years. The hacker later sent the author a copy of bank statements, social security number, credit card information, and tons of other personal information one should not have easy access to. The catch is, it was all of the author's information...

In essence, 4chan has a kind of mythos behind it. It is not a place one goes to in order to troll and aggravate the masses. Aggravating the users at 4chan has literally been known to lead to damaging repercussions. For example, one guy ended up with admissions of his homosexuality to all of his friends and family several days before his wedding on his Facebook page. His fiancé left him, his family was left in a state of shock, and everyone had a good laugh about it until he could prove himself otherwise. Other pranks include shutting down the whole of the MySpace site, causing the whole of AT&T's DSL service to be denied due to what they call DDoS attacks, and last but not least, declaring war on the Church of Scientology (my personal favorite).

Needless to say, 4chan can be harmless unless one somehow decides to aggravate the hive and bring it all come crashing down. Such a thing happened recently and despite 4chan's otherwise nasty reputation; I have to admit I find a certain amount of justice in their practical response. In this case, it was YouTube who screwed up and aggravated the users at 4chan.

Here's the background to the story. There exists, or should I say existed, a young boy of about eight years old on YouTube. His real name was Luke Taylor and he went by the name of Lukeywes1234. Like all other eight-year old boys, he had an interest in Super Mario Brothers and Harry Potter and started his own YouTube channel to talk about his interests. He was also one of those kids you immediately identify with as probably the target of bullying in school. That may or may not be the case but, nonetheless, his innocence is, to say the least, precious in and of itself, and so 4chan - the dark underbelly of the internet - decided to help him out.

The poor kid only had a few subscribers (probably his parents and a few of his friends) but persisted in making YouTube videos. Once 4chan found out about it, they collectively decided to subscribe to his "channel" out of the kindness of their hearts. Lukeywes1234, a sweet and innocent child, became the "king" of 4chan overnight. They knighted him, they sired him, and they propagated him to one of the top channels being used on YouTube. If that doesn't make you feel warm and fuzzy, then I don't know what will.

But, YouTube had to have their say in it. Once Lukeywes1234's popularity grew, YouTube banned him from posting his videos anymore due to finding out he violated the minimum age requirements. They shut down his channel and booted him off their site. Enter 4chan once again. Only this time, the hive was aggravated.

January 6, 2010 thus became YouTube Porn Day. Hundreds upon thousands of 4chan users made innocent looking videos and posted them on YouTube. These videos consisted of titles such as "Kittens Playing With String," or "Dogs Barking," etc... The only catch was that the members of 4chan were splicing explicitly pornographic videos into the middle sections of the video. Some of the things they put in there I cannot describe without violating the terms of service of this blog site. They posted hundreds upon thousands of videos on YouTube yesterday and ranked one another's videos with the highest score so to bring them to the "Most Watched" part of the site. A flood of pornographically interlaced videos has now reached YouTube all because of LukeyWes1234 and I can't help but feel a great sense of pride at my fellow humans for such a reciprocal sense of justice in the face of the corporate bullying of an eight-year old kid.

Here is a non-pornographic video made by a 4chan member to commemorate and to give a 'call to arms' for their fallen 'king.' Here is the battle cry of 4chan as they commemorate the day little Luke first became the apple of 4chan's eye. I have to admit... There's nothing like the sweet taste of revenge!
