A quick overview of some of the cities surrounding Sarasota

Posted 01-06-2010 at 08:03 PM by SoFLGal

Sarasota has a lot of perks as far as its location and activities, but perhaps the greatest perk to me is just how nice the city itself is. Great people, clean street. What else is there??

There are other cities in Southwest Florida, however. Let me give you a quick rundown, starting from the south:

Punta Gorda - Quaint downtown area, a lot of older homes but some newer ones as well in nice communities. Good deals on waterfront properties right now.

Port Charlotte - An averaged sized city with all the necessities but not a lot of extras. Great deals on waterfront properties here, too.

North Port - Similar to Port Charlotte but has probably DOUBLE the inventory of brand new homes going for ridiculously low prices. There's very little waterfront in North Port but a little.

Englewood - Mostly residential but beautiful all the same. It does have a few places for shopping and nice beaches but you'll have to drive about 20 minutes to Port Charlotte for a mall or major shopping.

Rotonda - Very similar to Englewood; the city names are even used interchangeably sometimes!

Venice - Mostly residential but has a quaint downtown area and beautiful beaches. The homes there are a good mix of older and newer. Venice has shopping centers, but no malls or other "city" advantages.

Osprey/Nokomis - These are little towns that run between Venice and Sarasota. They're residential but along the highway there are various shops. Equally close to Venice and Sarasota.

Sarasota - Clean, city-like atmosphere, plenty to do and explore. You're closer to Tampa (for those days when you need to visit a BIG city) and close the airport.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on the communities that are here in Southwest Florida. Honestly, all the places here are wonderful and they're all so close together that it wouldn't make a huge difference if you chose to be farther from the city and closer to the beaches or vice verse.
