Police Officer William Campbell was shot and killed May 30, 1979, by a man who had entered his police car and started using the radio in front of the police station.
Sgt. Campbell was walking out of the 6th District Police Station on Ruskin avenue when the suspect was able to fire a shotgun that was kept in the car. The shot struck Campbell in the chest, killing him.
The man was shot and killed by other officers when he tried to escape.

Detective Gregory Erson was shot and killed June 19, 1980, during a robbery attempt as he worked an undercover prostitution detail on the stroll.
Detective Erson had made six arrests that evening and was continuing the operation when the robbery took place.
Other officers found Erson slumped over the steering wheel of his car in a vacant parking lot at Whittier street and Westminster Place.
His gun, badge and wallet had been stolen.
Two suspects were convicted of capital murder. One of the men was later murdered in prison, the other was sentenced to life.

Police Officer Lorenzo Rodgers was shot and killed June 12, 1990, when he attempted to take action during an armed robbery while off duty.
He was standing in front of a Laundromat at Des Peres avenue and Washington boulevard, when a man approached and produced a handgun.
Officer Rodgers drew his revolver and exchanged shots with the man.
Both men were struck and Rodgers succumbed to his wounds.
The suspect was apprehended a short time later and convicted of murder. He was paroled in 2010.
