Police Officer Paul Kramer was shot March 25, 1971, when he intervened in a grocery store robbery while off-duty.
He had gone to his brother's grocery store at 230 North Taylor avenue when three men entered and announced a robbery.
When they ordered Officer Kramer to open the register he drew his revolver.
One of the suspects shot him in the head and chest. He was taken to the hospital where he died 5 days later.
After his third trial, the gunman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Police Officer Harold Warnecke was shot and killed December 15, 1972, by two robbery suspects outside of a Kroger grocery store at 4312 North Grand boulevard.
The two men had just robbed the store of $1,000 and were fleeing at 8am when Officer Warnecke pulled up to the store to do a business check, not knowing a robbery had just been committed.
As he was getting out of his patrol car the store manager pointed to the suspects and Warnecke called out to them.
One of them approached the officer and the other man circled around and shot him in the back three times. Before fleeing the suspects stole Warnecke's watch, wallet and gun. Both men were apprehended a short time later.

Police Officer Louis Sebold was shot and killed October 5, 1975, after being told that a man with a gun was in a church at 1407 North 20th street.
As Sebold approached the man, who was sitting on the front steps of the church, the man pulled a revolver and shot him twice in the chest. The man then fled into a housing project across the street.
The man was later shot and wounded by another officer and taken into custody.

Police Officer Claude Smith was shot and killed April 24, 1974, while assisting a sheriff's deputy search for a wanted man on the 8th floor of a building in the Vaughn Housing Project at 1101 North 18th street.
During the search, an unrelated man mistook Officer Smith for a child molester believed to be in the area and shot him. Smith was off duty when he agreed to assist the sheriff's deputy.

On January 28, 1951, Police Officer Aloysius Nelke and four other officers responded to a burglary in progress at 3700 Grandel Square and were met with gunfire as they exited the patrol car.
Nelke was struck in the neck and was paralyzed for the rest of his life. He passed away November 3, 1973.

Police Officer John Summers was shot and killed April 5, 1973, while chasing a suspect who had been shooting at his wife and setting her house on fire.
Officer Summers and other officers had responded to the home at 5777 Westminster Place. Officer Summers chased the suspect across the street at which time several shots were fired.
The suspect was taken into custody by other officers. After being unable to locate Summers, it was realized he never cleared back to duty and a search had begun for him.
He was found in the backyard of a home with a bullet wound in which he had bled to death. The suspect received a life sentence for first degree murder plus an additional 40 years for arson.
Summers was the first black police officer killed in the line of duty with his agency.
