Police Sgt. Harry Oebels was shot and killed July 8, 1966, when he intervened in a robbery at a pharmacy at 4221 Bayless avenue in Lemay.
He had gone to the pharmacy to pick up his wife from work when two men entered and announced a holdup. When they ordered Sgt. Oebels to come closer, he drew his revolver and exchanged shots with the suspects. He was fatally wounded and one of his shots hit one of the suspects in the buttocks.
Two years later, the suspect was taken into custody on an unrelated charge and underwent surgery to have the slug removed because of the pain. The slug was used as evidence to Oebel's murder and the suspect was sentenced to life.

Police Officer Frank Dobler Sr. was shot and killed with his own gun December 2, 1972, by a cab driver he told to move.
Officer Dobler was directing traffic at the intersection of Sixth and Lucas streets when the cab stopped on a crosswalk to pick up passengers.
Dobler told the cab driver to move the cab to the curb, and shut the cab's door.
The driver got out of the cab and assaulted the officer, pulling his jacket over his head and pushing the officer to the ground. During the assault, the cab driver got control of Dobler's weapon and shot him once in the head.
The suspect fled the scene in his cab and during a shootout with police, crashed into a patrol car. He was arrested and later hanged himself in his cell.
