On May 31, 1903, Officer Hugh McCartney was attacked by a mob of men and women for unknown reasons while on patrol at 14th street and Clark Avenue.
The mob attacked him with pistols, bricks and razors. While struggling to protect himself, he was able to shoot and kill one of the suspects. He was seriously injured and succumbed to his wounds 15 days later.

Officer Richard Delaney was shot and killed June 15, 1901 while he and another officer went to arrest a man for threatening his wife.
The woman had gone to the Fourth District station and made a report about her husband.
Delaney and another officer escorted the woman home with orders to arrest the husband. As Delaney entered the front door the suspect opened fire, killing him. The suspect was wounded in return fire and later apprehended in East St. Louis. He was sentenced to 10 years.

Chase Causes Excitement
St. Louis, Aug 2, 1903
Detectives McCarthy and Dooley, with pistols in their hands, chased Harry Skropsky of No. 1447 Biddle street, from Broadway to Chestnut street to the alley on Olive, between Broadway and Sixth street yesterday afternoon.
E.J. Gildersleeve, a ticket broker at No. 104 North Broadway, charges Skropsky with petit larceny.
Gildersleeve was selling a ticket to a customer, who laid down $15 on the counter to pay for it. Skropsky, who was standing in the office, grabbed it and ran out the door. Gildersleeve gave chase and shouted for the police.
Detectives McCarthy and Dooley were in the vicinity and heard Gildersleeve's cries.
Drawing their revolvers they joined in the chase. Skropsky ran west on Chestnut street to the alley, and then turning north dashed toward Olive street. The detectives overtook him as he ran out on to Olive.Posted 07-05-2021 at 12:35 PM by aliasfinn -

Officer Cornelius O'Keefe was shot and killed while searching for an assault suspect August 8, 1911.
During his search he encountered a man inside a candy store on Olive street. The man shot Officer O'Keefe in the chest. Due to thunderstorms, no other officers heard the shot and they did not find O'Keefe for 15 minutes. The suspect was later arrested and convicted of murder.

Oliver W Whitlock, a salesman and musician of 2517 Tyrell street, told police an accordion and its brown case were taken from his station wagon early Sunday morning in the 500 block of De Baliviere avenue. He valued the instrument at $900.

Jacob Schmidt, of Lebanon, Kan., was robbed of $38 by St. Louis county confidence men near Delmar Garden within an hour after he arrived at the Union Station to visit the fair.

On June 3, 1912, Officer Louis Schnarr was shot and killed while investigating a disturbance at a restaurant on Chouteau street.
A patron had been barred from the restaurant several days earlier for having several unpaid bills.
The man showed up with a revolver and started a commotion. The restaurant owner's wife pushed the man out the door and locked it. He then began banging on the door and yelling.
As Officer Schnarr approached to see what was happening, the suspect turned and shot him 3 times, killing him almost instantly. The suspect fled on a train but was later captured in Kimmswick, Mo. He was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life.

Officer Arthur Huddleston was shot and killed November 17, 1912, when he and another officer responded to a woman's screams on Washington street.
A recent parolee had just broken into a home and was threatening the woman with a knife. The officers split up and the other officer confronted the suspect and lost his gun in the struggle.
Huddleston came to his partner's assistance and was shot in the chest by the suspect. After a long manhunt the suspect was captured and sentenced to life.
