In the spring of 1884, Heavyweight Champion John L Sullivan was in St. Louis as part of his tour across the country.
Also in St. Louis at that time was Buffalo Bill's Wild West Rocky Mountain and Prairie Exhibition. They performed a skit where Sullivan gets rescued from attacking Indians by Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley.
After the performance they had a huge barbecue at General William T Sherman's house.

Pontiac was an Ottawa Indian chief who fought the British in the Great Lakes area. He was killed by a Peoria Indian three years later in 1769.
His body was taken across the river to a spot around St. Louis. It's now near the intersection of Broadway and Walnut street.
In 1901 the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a plaque dedicated to Pontiac in a hallway of the Southern Hotel at Broadway and Walnut. The Stadium East parking garage now stands in the spot, and a newer plaque on the corner of the garage honors the warrior chief.
