The tornado that hit St. Louis in 1896 destroyed the poor house first and then damaged an insane asylum for women.
Here is an account from one eyewitness:
" The lunatics all ran. The next day, those that were still alive were found in Tower Grove Park, hiding behind trees. One policeman that tried to get one of them had his uniform stripped away. Another insane woman pulled a policeman's beard out by the roots."

Back in the 1870s in St. Louis, two young men, tired of city life, decided to seek their fortunes out west.
Somewhere in Kansas they teamed up with three other men and planned to rob a stage but almost got their heads blown off by detectives that were riding inside.
They found out they didn't want any part of that business so they parted company with their three friends.
They then headed north and were doing well rustling cattle near Wyoming for a couple of years but were chased out of the area by lawmen, bounty hunters and vigilantes.
While in the Dakotas they encountered a Sioux war party and had to hide in a creek for two days until the Indians left.
They next made their way to Colorado and got involved in a large shootout in a crowded saloon where a man was killed. They and two other men were arrested and locked up. An angry mob began to form in front of the jail and the nervous deputy opened their cells and told them to run out the back door if they didn't want to get lynched.
The two men traveled back to St. Louis and when they reached the city and observed all the pickpockets, whores and cut-throats, one says to the other, " It's good to be home."
They ended up starting a shoe company that lasted many years until their children sold the business to one of the larger companies in St. Louis.Posted 05-09-2021 at 08:50 AM by aliasfinn -
