Hello, My name is Caterina. Okay, it really isn't, but it's close to my real name. After more than 15 years as a drink server (better known as a cocktail waitress) in a casino, I've realized it's time to get a real job. The money was great as a drink server, but I just can't make myself do that degrading job anymore. After two and a half years working casino surveillance, I've decided IT work might be the career for me. I enjoy the work I do with computers and compared to the people around me I seem to have a knack for it. And an interest.

Originally this blog was simply going to be about my attempt to transition from a dead end job in casino surveillance to a career in IT within the next year. However, personal issues surrounding my family keep popping up lately. I said "good-bye" to my parents and two of my siblings 10 years ago. I haven't seen or heard much from my whole family in that decade. I left that life behind. Now, I find myself running into and getting phone calls from family members I haven't seen in a long time. I recently got a Facebook page. I've gone from this quite separated, compartmentalized life, to all the moments of my life touching each other on Facebook. I don't know what will become of it.

Will the next year be a success story or a train wreck? I'm rooting for a success story, but, it seems, train wrecks are easier to make. I hope this blog will hold me accountable and push me on to the life I'd rather live.

Wish me luck.

And Now for Something Completely Different.

We had a departmental meeting last Thursday. The meeting itself wasn’t nearly as stupid as our last departmental meeting in December of 2009, but, so far, it’s been just as productive. Toby is trying to be a manager now. I think he’s feeling the heat from Corporate. The problem is Toby has no idea what a manager is supposed to do. He’s never really been one. He’s just had the title and the pay.

I met a friend for lunch on Friday. She used to work at our casino but...

The More I Interact With Law Enforcement The More The Idea of Relying on a Cop's Judgment Scares The **** Out of Me.

Outside our casino recently, a man received a severe beat down by two guys. They punched and kicked this guy for over a minute. The victim did nothing to defend himself. These two guys weren't trying to get his wallet to get their money back. They weren't trying to detain him for the law to deal with. They were getting off on brutalizing this guy. The victim is lucky to be alive. Last I heard he was still in the hospital. Among his multiple injuries, one of his broken ribs punctured his lung....

Big Trouble in Little China

Posted 09-22-2010 at 01:54 PM by Inconversant (A Year in Transition)

Toby, the boss, screwed up big time. Dumb part is, I told him more than a week ago he needed to move a problem camera to the different encoder. But I'm a dumb chick and I don't know anything. So, here we are, out of compliance with Gaming Regs. Corporate was down his throat. Toby called IT in to fix the problem. IT called the Tech for the company with whom we purchased our surveillance system. They told IT the only way to fix the problem is the move the camera to a different encoder. Genious!...

Thank God and Greyhound He's Gone.

Collin gave his 2 week notice on Thursday. Toby, our boss, told him a 2 day notice was plenty. Collin is out of our hair. Everyone in Surveillance is so excited he quit. We're having a Pot Luck today to celebrate.

Now all we have to do is make sure Toby doesn't hire another crazy person to take his place and we might be crazy free. I'm still concerned Frank might be crazy. But, he could be a benign sort of crazy, like the rest of us, only a little more than the usual amount....

African Animal Print Can Be Dangerous

Posted 09-03-2010 at 04:33 PM by Inconversant (A Year in Transition)

I enjoy a little conversation in the sauna, but I don't go to the gym to find a date. My African animal print swimsuit is a raggedy ass, chlorine faded, sagging, one piece, but every time I wear it, every pervert in the wet area chats me up, asking for my digits. My phone number that is, I don't think they want my fingers. I bought it because it was only 9 bucks at Wal-Mart and it fit. I have a plain black one piece, but it's 10 times more raggedy ass than the animal print one. In fact,...
