The Quest for Soup

Posted 06-21-2010 at 06:38 PM by EmmyNoether (A Good Defense)

Today I woke up feeling very ill. I ended up pulling the trigger and forcing myself to throw up, so that I could endure going to school and getting work done. There aren't sick days in graduate school. So, I worked through nausea, and actually found myself getting something accomplished. When lunch had rolled around, my stomach still wasn't interested in the turkey-bologna sandwich that I had packed for it. The quest for soup began.

I went to the China Panda (on campus) to learn...

To help or not to help

Posted 06-20-2010 at 10:51 AM by EmmyNoether (A Good Defense)

The tick bites have been itching less and less each day - this is quite a relief. So far, there hasn't been anything on the home/work front that seems remarkable enough to write about. My adviser is still in London for another week. I'm still doing page long calculations and plan to use tomorrow to write them up in another file that I will send to my adviser, knowing full-well that he's not going to read it (at least it is out there). There was, however, a very interesting character who landed...

Wondering where I am

Posted 06-18-2010 at 08:02 PM by EmmyNoether (A Good Defense)

Today, I worked, and sadly without much accomplishment. I've mentioned time and time again that math research is like a perverted dance of 2 steps forward and 1.5 steps back. I spend most of the day doing these massive calculations that take up multiple notebook pages in my tiny computer-type. (My adviser, after looking at my hand written notes, has suggested that I should hand-write my dissertation, because it would probably be neater.... ) So, I spent the most of today trying calculations...

An Update

Posted 06-16-2010 at 01:20 PM by EmmyNoether (A Good Defense)

Yesterday and today were a complete waste. After not sleeping much Monday night, I spent the majority of Tuesday in an exhausted haze. Plus, the dog hadn't improved, so after taking care of a couple of things, I brought her back to the vet, for 3 hours. A different vet saw her and noticed that she wheezed while breathing. How the other vet missed this, I don't know. So, she ordered chest x-rays, which scared the **** out of my dog (literally and figuratively). We only got one x-ray, and the...

A Day Like Yesterday

Posted 06-15-2010 at 09:33 AM by EmmyNoether (A Good Defense)

Yesterday was one of those days that causes you to just shake your head, throw up your hands and sigh as hard as you can. Okay, a little background: Sunday, the boyfriend and I took my dog for an extended walk in a local hiking-trail park. Like most owners of large dogs, we took off the leash when no one was around. For the first 2 miles of the hike, my dog was within 20 feet of us. Then, while we were distracted for 5 seconds, she took off into some direction after a squirrel. For 15 to 20...
