You will have to do some things in Jacksonville, and you may want to do some things (e.g., buy a car, go to a Jaguars football game, to a mall like St. Johns Town Center - nice area, etc). Basically most anything on east side of the river is going to be safe areas of Jax that you will likely utilize.

Nocatee is a nice area, lots of families, kids, things to do, pools, close to beach, etc.

Jacksonville is not a terrible city and you will find that you need Jacksonville being close by as it offers a ton that Ponte Vedra does not.
