What defines a Townie?

There is a never-ending debate over what defines a townie in certain towns. Is it that your grandfather’s father had resided in the town? Or is it you have to live in that town for longer than 20 years? I did some research on the definition of being a townie, according to Webster, a townie is any resident that lives in a town where a university also resides and that individual may or may not attend the university.
