You won't be in the mountains till after Charleston. Until you hit the Ohio River (Marietta/Parkersburg) you'll be in boring Ohio flatlander country. South of Parkersburg on in to Charleston, the terrain is rolling hills, but no mountains.

To me, the most dangerous part of your trip is from the WV line south to Mt Airy NC, especially the stretch of I-77 around the VA-NC state line.

If you plan on stopping at about 8:30 then your best bet is Huntington WV. It is about 2 hours and 45 min from Columbus. That is assuming that you are leaving at 6pm. If you leave earlier then u might be able to push it and stay in Charleston, which is right before I-77 begins. You could easily stay anywhere in between Huntington and Charleston as the roads are quite straight there as well.
