Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

All I Seem To Want For Christmas Are............Gift Cards

Posted 12-27-2011 at 06:38 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Not that I wish to bask in the commercialism of the Christmas season now just past, but there just isn't that much I want year after year. Next year might be different, as needs change, but outside of a couple of pairs of pants and a strainer, there isn't much else I wanted for this year's Santa serenade. Until I move into that Spanish villa I keep dreaming about, well......

So I've asked Sanny Claus for some gift cards to area restaurants. Problem solved. ...

Right On Oak Street: Roanoke Seems To Have It Going On

Posted 12-26-2011 at 07:32 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

At first glance, you'd think it'd be the quintessential Texas small town. And it already is, but like a lot of surrounding suburbia near two big cities (which shall remain nameless ), it is facing expansion. Okay, the old-time water tower adds to the ambience, but I digress.

The E word has arrived in earnest in the town of Roanoke, Texas, which has already drawn so many new tourists to what is becoming a new tourist trap. It has a charm all its own, ...

Merry Christmas 2011: Enjoy The Season!

Posted 12-24-2011 at 09:54 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Well, readers, it's that time once again. So, I'll do it a day early, but what the heck? It's a Christmas weekend around the world, and there is eager anticipation as per the usual for what's to come. Best holiday wishes to all of you this season. Enjoy the snow (if it is snowing in your neighborhood), the food, the music, and the experience. My area is getting some rain, but then again, I'd much rather have sunshine and a high of 70. We'll get to the spring...

After All This Time, A University Finally Gets Its Just Due

I may know of the school, since I grew up in Arlington, Texas, but I was never a student there, as I chose to go elsewhere. Oh, I went to a few band camps at this place and watched its famed jazz orchestra perform a few times on campus. But something was really missing from this fine academic institution and I actually don't mean football.

The place I'm referring to is the University of Texas at Arlington. It's a fantastic campus and one that is capable of having...

Houston Baseball Seeing The Face Of Change

Posted 12-14-2011 at 07:38 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

The Houston Astros will spend just one more season in the National League, its fifty-first, before making their historic move to the American League in 2013. The franchise clearly has a lot of work to do in coming off their worst season ever. It had been time to change ownership after Drayton McLane did so much for this team for so long, and that included the Astros' first-ever trip to the World Series.

And said Fall Classic is where Houston would like to be again,...
