Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

More Scattershooting / Where Does The Speed Limit Really Cap Off?

Here it is, time to do more scattershooting just for you on Case's Column. I've got stuff flying all over the place that you probably need to duck. Nonetheless, we'll keep each other good company right here. Let me let 'er rip!

********

Once upon a few years ago, Texas highway officials raised speed limits on our rural Texas highways (most notably, the interstates) to 70 miles per hour. At the time, it didn't seem to bother me and I was...

February Is A-Comin' And A-Leapin'

I can't believe that we're already about to finish off the first month of what is not so much a New Year anymore. Time needs to really slow down a bit. And February is going to be here.

There's going to be a lot to do this next month. The news will be full of stories in its first few days, what with things like Groundhog Day, the Super Bowl, National Signing Day (high school athletes signing letters of intent at the college of their choice), the opening...

Still A Hilarious Story........And Don't Try This At Home!

Posted 01-25-2012 at 03:03 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

I still think about this every so often, but I wouldn't say it's something I'm proud of. Years ago (sometime after dinosaurs roamed the earth in my case), I tried something different in a quest to lose just a few pounds. Yes, it should have been exercise and diet, but in my twenties, who'd have cared if I were to eat two large cheeseburgers in one sitting? I'd have rather kissed a pig than quit eating.

No, but after either watching a television commercial...

The Dublin DP Double-Whammy: History Sacrificed For Trademark

Posted 01-23-2012 at 05:48 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Many of you know already that I love Dublin Dr Pepper, or, as I've called it, real Dr Pepper. Next to root beer, it's the drink that beats all drinks. And I'm sure that, by now, you've heard the bad news that this legendary soft drink is no more, unless it somehow continues made and sold under another name.

Dr Pepper/Snapple decided that Dublin DP was infringing on the parent company's trademark. Huhhh?? The Dublin formula was the original formula...

It's Been Forty Years Since My Favorite Show First Aired

A couple posts ago, I harped on the sixties and what a great musical decade it was, but now, I'd like to veer into some "breaking" news about a favorite show of mine that made its debut in another decade. That decade would be the 1970s, and that TV show in question? That would be "Emergency!", which debuted on NBC as a series on January 22, 1972. The week before, a pilot movie aired on that same network, entitled "The Wedsworth-Townsend Act...
