Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

September Feels Weird Without That Telethon!

Posted 09-12-2012 at 05:40 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

I know I'm a wee bit late in writing this, but that thought came back to me. How many of you are thinking what I'm thinking? The MDA Labor Day Telethon, as we used to know it, is practically gone from the airwaves, replaced by a much shorter show, and with a new title. That new show is likely not to be noticed by anyone. I have noticed that something is just missing from Labor Day weekend. I mean, who hasn't noticed?

Yes, I have visited this very subject...

I Haven't Forgotten -- And Neither Should You

Who would have ever thought that, on a sunny September morning in Dallas, the darkest day in American history would unfold? I was just getting out of bed, having slept until around 7:30 or so, and I routinely turned on my radio to listen to some sports talk. Things seemed to be going just fine, and I was about to get the coffee turned on and go about the day, but I decided to stay in bed a little longer. Then Rich Phillips of KTCK-AM in Dallas said something on that radio program...

Football Time Again In America

Posted 09-01-2012 at 10:21 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Can you believe that we're once again arriving at another season of football? Yep. That time again, indeed. Texas high schools have already begun with games during what is called Zero Week (meaning that the real first week usually takes place in September). Colleges begin today, and that includes my Texas Longhorns. The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans begin their NFL openers within the next week.

Nevertheless, fall is on the horizon and in the offing. I just...

New Windshields Are All They're Cracked Up To Be

Posted 08-25-2012 at 06:42 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

The mystery occurred while I was at work on a recent Monday afternoon. When I finished lunch that day to go out to my car to put something in it, I left it with my side windows cracked open for air. After all, it is Texas and temperatures do get real hot out there on that thar parking lot.

So what happens when I leave work? I find a foot-long crack from the lower left siding going diagonally to just in front of the driver's view. It wasn't there earlier. Not...

Astros' Enlightenment: The RedHawks Are Winning Now

Posted 08-18-2012 at 07:59 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

The Houston Astros need good news. They need lots of good news because the big-league club has not played good baseball (well, not much of it, anyway) since April and May. You can say that there's a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. And said light takes up residence 443 miles away in a little Triple-A ballpark north of the Red River.

Behold this: The Oklahoma City RedHawks have a winning record in the Pacific Coast League, at 66-60, and may well be vying for...
