Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scully Will Be Missed In The Baseball Landscape

Posted 09-28-2016 at 09:38 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

I couldn't help myself. For a couple of weeks now, I've taken a little time to listen to other major league baseball teams on my computer when the Astros weren't on. One time I have had to pay more attention to was the Los Angeles Dodgers.

There was this legendary play-by-play guy who'd been part of the organization for sixty-seven years, doing both radio and television. This week marks the end of a very long era, but wow! During that era, he'd also provided storytelling...

Why Roy Orbison Should Have Been A Lubbock Music Artist

Posted 09-28-2016 at 09:16 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Every once in a while, I take a listen to Texas' legendary Roy Orbison, the guy who had absolutely incredible range in his singing voice. He spent his early years in West Texas with a band called the Wink Westerners, with a nod to the tiny town of Wink, where he spent his teenage years.

Interesting how his family moved to Wink and not, say, Lubbock. I say that because Lubbock, at that particular time (late 1950s to early 1960s) was a strong music town and there...

A Funny Buc-ee's Story You Would Not Believe

Posted 09-25-2016 at 07:26 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

If you've ever traveled my home state of Texas, then chances are, you've probably stumbled upon one of my favorite franchises, and that's Buc-ee's.

You know about them. It's a big convenience store on steroids. Each travel center has about one hundred gas pumps. Lots of things in the store which range from food to clothes to collectibles, and the list goes on.

Well, I'd like to share a humorous story about their Madisonville location, which I've...

Scattershooting / Turning Over A New Leaf In Fall

Posted 09-24-2016 at 12:42 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Here we go once again with more here and more there in this haven of readership which we call Case's Column. Fall is officially in the air, so if you're ready for a gathering around our computer campfire, then make sure you have plenty of marshmallows.

********

Well, you know it's fall when we start sayings like cold front as opposed to cool front. Fall become official on Thursday, and football is well underway. My Texas Longhorns might not...

Houston's Brown Rides Off Into The Sunset

Posted 09-22-2016 at 09:54 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

In my last post, I talked about this writer getting a new job. In this post, I'm going to talk about somebody else retiring from his.

It doesn't seem possible if you're a Houston Astros fan, and, for many years, you've seen this broadcaster on TV doing play-by-play. Many games, many calls, many of them very memorable. But the truth is now out: Bill Brown decided that this was the right time.

The guy we like to call "Brownie" is...
