Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

One Restaurant Needing A Comeback: Sonny Bryan's BBQ

Posted 02-04-2019 at 10:45 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

It looked like, some twenty years ago, Sonny Bryan's Barbecue would expand past ten locations and, hopefully, some other Texas cities, as it had been a Dallas institution. They even built a location in Utah, of all places.

What is Sonny Bryan's today? It's still around, but it's been badly reduced to just five Dallas area locations, with just one outside of the city of Dallas. They used to have eateries in Fort Worth, Irving (Las Colinas), and Carrollton....

Is KOKE-FM Turning Into The Eric Raines Channel?

Posted 02-02-2019 at 07:55 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)
Updated 02-02-2019 at 09:24 PM by case44

Did the people at the Austin Radio Network do this on purpose or did Eric Raines decide on his own to take up so much air time? If you ever listen to KOKE-FM (99.3, 98.5), you might think that longtime Austin country jock Eric Raines is always on.

It sure seems that way. He's on Bob Cole's morning show. He's on the afternoon show (his regular and rightful spot) with Rita Ballou. He also hosts the Country Gold Show on Saturday mornings (a spot that Tom Allen once practically...

Imagine If 'Police Squad!' Had Not Been Cancelled

Posted 01-31-2019 at 08:20 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

As many of you already know, I love to reminisce. In going through many YouTubes here and there, I came upon some old clips of the old ABC-TV series, "Police Squad!". I don't have to tell you about it, as you remember why that show was created.

Back in the early 1980s, "Police Squad!" was a show ahead of its time. Fresh off the success of the movie, "Airplane!", Leslie Nielsen's transition to comedy turned out to be a smash. So many...

The Day The Music Died --- Almost Sixty Years Later

Posted 01-28-2019 at 08:58 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

It was not the best of nights to be out in an airplane, particularly one taking off from Mason City, Iowa. The time was winter, 1959, and the weather contained too much snow. All that Buddy Holly and a few others did was get a head start to the next stop, finishing a show in Clear Lake and progressing towards Moorhead, Minnesota via Mason City and Fargo. He had to charter a plane because his buses either had broken down or didn't have good heating (the latter of which cost Buddy...

Keuchel And Gonzalez Back With The Astros? Never Say Never

Posted 01-26-2019 at 08:52 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Above all, I write this with caution. The thing is, with baseball in the wintertime, teams have to make important decisions. It is astonishing how many free agents are still out there, having not been signed by any particular team.

The Houston Astros once had guys like Dallas Keuchel and Marwin Gonzalez. You've seen what they've done the last few years and both solidly contributed to the Astros' only world championship a year and a half ago. Neither of them have...
