Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

New Space Force Should Initiate At Least One Change In Houston

Posted 03-01-2020 at 08:21 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

I'll be interested in seeing how this new Space Force, initiated by President Donald Trump, will play out among our military bases in the coming years.

While the logistics and plans are being worked out, one suggestion would be where space is alive and well, and that's Houston. There's an airfield site which once served as an Air Force Base for a number of years, and it could be converted back, if, for nothing else, than to accommodate our Space Force. Ellington?...

Leaping Into Vacation Time With The Leap Day Passed

Posted 03-01-2020 at 07:12 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

This type of thing happens every four years. And, no, I'm not talking about a presidential election.

We just had Leap Day on this planet yesterday. This Texas critter is just now hitting vacation, but it couldn't have been planned any better than to put my last work day on 29 February. So I have taken the leap (and not the plunge ) into another week off from work. Just need the R&R more than anything. Some day trips from where I am, and this boy...

For I-14 In Texas, Branches May Have To Buy A Letter

Posted 02-27-2020 at 07:33 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

If only you could work for the Federal Highway Administration and AASHTO and have Vanna White from the "Wheel Of Fortune" game show stop in and assist with the future numbering system for our nation's highways. With the following scenario, I doubt we'll need to buy a vowel....

Interstate 14 only runs from Belton to Copperas Cove at present. In the future, the highway is expected to split at Brady, Texas. That means that we will have another interstate...

It's Not The Coronavirus -- It's The Media

Posted 02-27-2020 at 07:08 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

First, I'll preface with this: Things are going to be just fine. The events of this week? No problem. Just a bump in the road. We'll get through this.

I know many folks are concerned with the Dow Jones Industrial Average this week. My lands, that rascal has gone down about three thousand points in less than a week. Seems like yesterday when we talked about 29,000 and that we're just a stone's throw from 30,000. Are things really that bad with this coronavirus...

What's In A Name With Various States?

Posted 02-26-2020 at 06:06 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

I get such a kick out of seeing what goes behind the names of certain cities around the Southwest combining the names of neighboring states. If you've been down my way, then you may know a few of them.

Texarkana. Arkoma. Texhoma. Calexico.

Funny how I don't see other combinations in other parts of the country. Can you imagine people up north trying to make their way to Connectichusetts? How about stopping in Montoming? Or Hamperica?...
