Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Same Title --- But Not The Same Song

Posted 02-28-2021 at 02:48 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

On my mind right now are two songs. Both are entitled "Right Or Wrong". The common property, besides the title, is that both are charted country songs.

The first "Right Or Wrong" actually began as a jazz song, making its debut right around 1921 by Mike Markel and his Orchestra. Well, wouldn't you know Ol' Bob Wills would take that tune many fortnights later and make a record --- and a hit --- out of it? Sure did. George Strait would...

Contract Extensions: First, Carlos, You Have To Produce

Posted 02-23-2021 at 09:45 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

The Houston Astros and Carlos Correa are in a bit of a quandary right now. Correa wants a contract extension before the regular season even begins. The club, however, may be a bit reserved about it.

Unfortunately, I cannot blame the latter situation given Correa's injury-riddled past. Never mind what the San Diego Padres just did with what I felt was a rash and ridiculous extension that they gave young shortstop Fernando Tatis, Jr. That deal, I predict, will blow...

What A Difference A Few Days Can Make

Posted 02-22-2021 at 12:10 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Six days ago, six days before your writer scribbles this on his computer, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded a low temperature of -1. Let that sink in for a moment.

Minus. One.

Minus.

One.

You just don't get that type of temperature every day (or every year, for that matter) in North Texas. Yet, that's where we were, as Mother Nature wanted to play head games with Americans and those pretending...

Mardi Gras Not On Many Minds This Year

Posted 02-18-2021 at 09:28 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)
Updated 02-18-2021 at 10:52 AM by case44

Usually, when we get to Fat Tuesday, Ol' Case would have a tradition of meeting at Pappadeaux with a work friend or two, wear some beads, and share some great Cajun food. And you already know about what folks in New Orleans and Galveston do every year when Mardi Gras takes center stage.

Such has not been the case this year, and for two chief reasons. Number one, COVID has made any Fat Tuesday celebration reduced to virtual status. Secondly, Mardi Gras had...

Rush Limbaugh (1951 - 2021): Radio Pioneer, Innovator, Patriot

Posted 02-18-2021 at 09:17 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

What I heard on the radio yesterday (as of this writing) did not come as a surprise, as he's had to fight Stage 4 throat cancer for the past year. It was a just a disappointment to hear, period.

This writer will have to find another show to listen to at 11 each weekday morning now that a giant is no longer with us. Rush Limbaugh, Mister EIB, the Doctor of Democracy and the Voice of Reason for millions of Americans, passed away Wednesday at age 70. Radio life changed...
