El Chilito - Tacos y Cafe is a long time personal fave for Interior Mexican and TexMex tacos and burritos, just a half dozen blocks east of the UT campus at the foot of Cherrywood. When I lived in the area I ate there at least three times a week because they were consistently good and reasonably priced, and have some choices you don't just find everywhere. And breakfast is available all day!
My favorite is Cochinita Pibil, Yucatan style braised pork with achiote and orange, topped with pickled onions, available as a taco, burrito, or full plate with rice and beans. It has the authentic taste of the Yucatan. Just be careful of staining anything with the savory juices, dyed red by the ground achiote seeds. Cascabel Pork is another great choice - pork shoulder stewed in cascabel chile salsa with nopales. And you can't go wrong with Barbacoa - beef cheeks steamed with onions, citrus, and garlic, served with cilantro and fresh onion. Coffee, soft drinks, draft beer and frozen sangria available. Don't miss the Paletas for dessert... Mexican fruit juice "popsicles"
It's a casual place, with an order window for takeaway or to eat there at picnic tables. And the people-watching is as good as the food is.
