Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve

Pescadero Marsh Natural Preserve is a must see destination for bird lovers. The protected wetland area is the domicile for a variety of bird species including blue herons, egrets, and northern harriers. The Preserve is across the street from Pescadero State Beach on Highway 1. Many birding experts point to early spring and late fall as the best time to visit when the migrations are in full swing. The beauty in the springtime with its array of wildflowers is hard to describe. The marsh is actually part of Pescadero Beach and the only vast wetland along the coast of the San Francisco Peninsula, and includes a multiplex of several habitats. Visitors can expect to see up to 200 species of birds during a trip through the marsh habitat, including over 60 varieties that actually nest on the grounds. The Preserve is also home to a number of ground dwelling amphibians and other animals. The San Francisco garter snake, the California red-legged frog, and the tidewater goby are residents of the Marsh and are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Volunteers conduct two walking tours through the marsh during the year. This 235 acre Marsh Preserve is an excellent educational venue for visitors of all ages.
