Jacks Peak County Park

For hiking enthusiasts, Jacks Peak Park has a lot to offer. There are some 8.5 miles of horseback riding and hiking trails, ranging from the 0.3-mile Jacks Peak Trail to the2.2-mile loop formed by the Iris and Rhus trails. They pass through cathedral-like forests, give access to secluded meadows, and provide panoramic ridge-top vistas.

The Skyline Self-Guided Nature Trail circles Jacks Peak, with switchbacks that lead right over the summit. Along the way, fossils from the Miocene epoch can be seen. Those making this 0.8-mile hike are advised to stop by the park's entrance station to pick up a brochure describing the many features of this trail.

Family picnic sites with tables and barbeque grills can be found adjacent to the Jacks Peak and East parking lots. They have restroom facilities and reservations are not necessary. For gatherings of up to 50 people, such as wedding, reunions, or company outings, the Monterey Pines Group Area is available for $45 per day. It has nine tables, a barbeque pit, and running water, but no electricity. Consumption of alcohol is allowed for those who obtain a permit.

Jacks Peak County Park is located at 25020 Jacks Peak Park Road, Monterey, California 93940. Hours of operation vary by season, from 10am~5pm in November through January to 11am~6:30pm during the summer. The day-use charge per vehicle is $4 on weekdays and $5 on weekends and holidays.
