1. Moonshine Gulch Saloon

City: Rochford, SD
Category: Nightlife
Address: FR 231

Description: The Moonshine Gulch is a local secret—a remote mountain bar with no telephone, a handful of electric lights, and genuine western character. This is a real saloon—a bit wacky, pretty funky, and gloriously idiosyncratic. The rustic old building has a wooden front porch where you can lounge on a bench and view the tiny town of Rochford, pretending you’ve gone back in time to its decades-ago mining days. Inside there’s simply too much to look at: wildlife trophies, hundreds of hats, antiques, junk everywhere, and stuff covering the walls in a visual extravaganza. Even the restrooms have quotable quotations on their walls. The food is great—homemade fries, burgers, and sandwiches—and you can have a brew with your meal. You won’t find video lottery here, but you will find real locals enjoying real life, deep in the Black Hills. Moonshine Gulch is on the main road through Rochford, a town so small that—if you find it—you can’t miss this saloon: It’s the main attraction.
