Description: Designated by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird and Mammal Area, this 7,730-acre park’s forests, lakes, wetlands, and fields are home to many species of flora and fauna that are rare in Pennsylvania. Cold-water Scotts Run Lake offers great trout fishing, while Hopewell Lake hosts warm-water species including big bass. You can rent boats daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on weekends during May and September. The park features 35 miles of hiking (naturalist hikes are available in spring, summer, and fall) and 20 miles of mountain biking trails. Two major courses have earned French Creek the nickname “Orienteering Capital of America.” Over 60,000 acres are open to hunting and trapping deer, turkey, rabbit, pheasant, and squirrel. About 3 miles southeast are also 1,800 acres of state game land. Camping is available year-round at 200 wooded, modern sites (over 60 have electric hookups) that have access to shower and flush toilet facilities. Pet-friendly sites are available.
