5. Gar Woods Grill And Pier

City: Carnelian Bay, CA
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (530) 546-3366
Address: 5000 North Lake Boulevard

Description: Named for the elegant mahogany boats developed in the 1920s by Garfield Wood, Gar Woods Grill and Pier celebrates fine food along with Tahoe’s classic wood boating era. Nestled on the lakeshore right next to Sierra Boat Company, and bordering on a public pier and beach, Gar Woods is a beehive of activity during the Concourse de Elegance in August, when the wonderful woodies are on display. The dinner menu at this laid-back eatery features a variety of pasta, fresh seafood, and steaks; appetizers include beer-battered coconut prawns; and the lunch menu includes a pepper and garlic turkey burger. The wine list is good, but the cocktail menu, featuring such provocative names as the “Wet Woody,” is great. If you arrive by boat (except in winter), you can take advantage of valet boat parking at the pier. The view of the lake (either from the deck or the indoor dining area) is lovely, and the people-watching can’t be beat. It’s open for lunch and dinner daily during high season; lunch is served weekends only during low season. One of the most successful restaurants at the lake, Gar Woods claims Riva Grill at South Shore and Caliente at Kings Beach as sister properties.
