Montana's farms numbered 28,000 in 2002, with average acreage of 2,090 (846 hectares). Farm income totaled nearly $1.8 billion in 2001. In 2002, Montana was the nation's 4th-leading wheat producer, with an output of 109.9 million bu, valued at $466.7 million. Other major crops were barley (3rd in the US) with 39.9 million bu, valued at $115.7 million; sugar beets (6th) with 1.1 million bu, valued at $44.6 million; and hay (12th) with 4.6 million tons, valued at $379.1 million.
