Description: The founding hospital in the growing MedStar Health System, this 357-bed facility is the third largest in Baltimore, offering subacute and acute care to eastern Baltimore County residents. A teaching hospital, Franklin Square has more than 750 physicians and 2,800 employees. Students at Essex Community College, located next door, receive clinical training in radiography and respiratory therapy. Its heart center is the third-largest, in terms of cases handled, in the area, while its OBTLC (Obstetrics Tender Loving Care) program, featuring home-like accommodations for birthing, makes it one of the busiest obstetrics programs in the area. Its Psychology and Behavioral Medicine section handles inpatient adult, adolescent, and child psychiatric care services. Specialties include cardiology, oncology, emergency medicine, labor and delivery, and general medicine. A new 356,000-square-foot patient care tower is scheduled to open in late 2010. The seven-story building will have 291 private rooms, an expanded emergency department, a dedicated pediatric emergency department and inpatient suite, four medical and surgical units, and an expanded 50-bed critical care unit.
