Chicago, IL Overview

Introduction

On a post–high school trip to Europe, I quickly learned what foreigners thought of Chicago: “You’re from Chicago? Oh, gangsters, shoot ’em up, bang bang!” they’d exclaim, with an excited twinkle in their eyes. Well, yes, there used to be gangsters and there probably are some now, but . . . .Well, it was amusing, to say the least. But not surprising, given the prominent role the gangster era played in Chicago’s history, with its popular images of glamour and wealth that were more entertaining than any movie.

These days, our image is no longer of a criminal nature (thank goodness), but rather a culturally dynamic, ethnically diverse, and economically solid metropolitan city that’s both big and friendly. It’s a city that equally cherishes its lakefront and its skyscrapers, its award-winning restaurants and its hole-in-the-wall eateries, its fashion-forward trends and its casual style. It’s a city where artisans of all kinds find opportunities to express their individuality and their creativity—whether as chefs at innovative cafes or owners of funky clothing shops, brewing their own beer, or producing thought-provoking theater or controversial artwork. And in turn, Chicago has an eager audience that appreciates the results of their craft, a population open to new ideas and willing to try just about anything. We’re an inclusive sort of city, too, where a gay pride parade and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade are two of the most attended of any in the city. Where Fortune 500 companies fill the Loop, and independent businesses fill the neighborhoods. And we’re a tough-get-going place where a dump of 24 inches of snow might be annoying, but sets us back only a day or two.

Speaking of that weather, though outdoor activity can be limited by our Midwestern four seasons, Chicago boasts an excellent walkability factor, and residents don’t miss a moment to enjoy the fresh air. We take advantage of the many bike and jogging paths, boating and fishing spots, dozens of alfresco dining options, and its acres and acres of green space. Chicago has surprising natural beauty, in fact, from its lakeshore to the riverfront, and in its many parks sprinkled throughout the city, giving people space to breathe and a convenient break from the downtown bustle. While the gangsters of yesteryear may be gone, we know their stories live on, which is just fine with Chicagoans who relish the chance to chat up visitors about them and anything else they’d like to know. We’re just that kind of place.
