All of a sudden I have many family members and friends of friends not only from NY but from other north east states moving to Virginia and The Carolina states instead of the usual Florida? Why the new trend to these states all of a sudden?
Because it’s over a 100 degrees in May in Florida. Great in winter but it’s to hot unless you snow bird. And as said above real estate is crazy but has cooled off a little recently.
Virginia isn't a new destination for New Yorkers. Actually migration there has slowed significantly.
20 years ago a lot of people who were heading south somewhere other than FL were moving to VA, but now it's NC and increasingly SC or TN.
The moderate to progressive New Yorkers are NOT flocking to the Carolinas. Everyone who I know who has moved to the Carolinas, is already conservative to some degree. They become even more so after living there. They become "southern" as do their children.
I see this in my own family. My older cousins, former Marines; moved to South Carolina 20 years ago. one of his daughters recently married a young man of southern lineage. He is a youth pastor at one of those faux hip but conservative megachurches, Now my counsin's, daughter, a teacher by trade, is joining him in the ministry.
They are NOT "liberal".
Moderate to progressive NYers prefer Florida, where it actually is warm, certain suburbs of Atlanta Athens, and Savannah GA.
Middle and upper New Yorkers have never moved to Florida because it was cheap. Older ones want year round warm weather. They prefer South Florida.
Nothing new and has been going on for a while, but as 585WNY had mentioned, this is slowing a bit. What could be happening is the halfback effect, where NYers moved to FL, but since FL has changed quite a bit, they move in the middle to the Carolinas and VA. So, some of this may be indirect movement of NYers by way of FL.
More affordable than Florida with lower hurricane risk. A lot of Floridians have left for the Carolina’s too.
