The lack of HD Radio on the old receivers is a show stopper.
plug a modern tuner into aux. BUT! HD radio is crap.
yes yes I know it was supposed to add dynamic headroom and take the old 30-15K response to a true 20-20K or even 20-22K BUT, with HD radio came all the side channels and the stations pack so much crap in there that the resolution of the ORIGINAL signal over digital is so deprecated that on a good clean amp, its unlistenable.
Here in pitt I would have listened to WDVE, but they went HD with 3 side channels to carry sports and they send a lot over RDS, so on my middle of the road SX890 daily driver...I keep wanting to take the amp out of service to rebuild the tuner - thats how bad it sounds. commercialization of the media, took all the bennies from us!
Indeed it is....I always press the button to disable it if it comes on when im in the car.... To me it sounds worse...
because money talks! lol it is working to be the 8-track of broadcast...
also, in the day the 30-15k fm broadcast was analog - vinyl "spinning stax of wax..." but today its all MP3 or WMA. hell most radio stations run from a laptop plugged into the master. so now its the fleas of MP3 (WMA fits the FM frequency range better) and 99.9% of us do not have an FM quadrature tuner but rather a 'chopper'...noise upon noise upon noise. fortunately as we age our hearing goes to crap...
Without HD radio in my area, instead of classical music, I would be limited to NPR or a 6-commercial marathon followed by a Katy Perry song. Oh, the humanity!

Came to say this. I hope no one seriously thought the 'old stuff' would be garbage. The basics haven't changed. Just the hardware that makes the sound has.
Their "present day" receiver was a 2009 Yamaha unit?? According to the copyright date, printed at the bottom of the article was 2023. So, they're calling a 24 year old receiver a "current day unit"?
