Santa Ana River Trail

The Santa Ana River Trail is being designed as the longest multi-use trail in Southern California. The Santa Ana River Trail or Bicycle Path is mostly constructed, but there are a few areas still left to pave. It starts at the Pacific Ocean at Huntington Beach and runs along the Santa Ana River to the Orange/ Riverside County Line. The trail can be used as a horse route. The bike trail starts at Santa Ana River Crest for Coast Riding, hiking, and biking. It is going to be 100 miles when it is completed.

The trail has existed for several decades already. In fact in 1989, it was known as the freeway for bicycles in the Great Los Angeles section. In 1977 the path was formed as the National Recreation Trail. By 1990 it was necessary for the trail to undergo a clean up as there was concern about the street gangs and homeless. The police increased their presence in 2000 and in 2005 heavy rain knocked out quite a bit of the path due to erosion. Repairs will cost $1 million and are part of a $43 million cleanup project. The paved path is 12 feet wide and roughly 70 miles are complete right now.
