Monterey State Historic Park

Monterey State Historic Park encompasses much of Monterey Old Town Historic District in Monterey, California. It is considered a national landmark due to the fact that the first theater was built on the park grounds. It was also the site for the Monterey Customs House and the site of the first American Flag in California. The park has 17 buildings, which were declared landmarks in 1970.

The state park has worked to restore many of the buildings to their original state, including the Cooper Molera Adobe Complex. Other buildings include Larkin House, California's First Brick House, Old Whaling Company, Stevenson House, Colton Hall, Pacific House Museum, Casa del Oro, Interpretive House, and Casa Soberanes.

Many of the houses signify the change from Spanish history to the US statehood California became. Many of the houses date to the early 1800s, like Custom House. It was built by the Mexican government. Cooper Molera Adobe was built by John Bautisa Rogers Cooper in 1823. He was a sailor and merchant, thus the house also has quite a bit of Spanish architecture. The first brick house was built by Duncan Dickerson in 1847, as the first man to introduce brick to California.
