Howland Hill Road

Howland Hill Road is a scenic pathway visitors can take from Crescent City, California. The road is a lot like a simple trail, with an easy route. Along the way visitors will enjoy beautiful scenery on a meandering style road where trees covered in moss hang over at certain points. Many of the trees are redwoods. The route takes visitors through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. It is a single road with graded dirt rather than pavement for much of the few miles.

The road can be slippery when wet, and since it is a temperate rainforest the road is often wet. The trail will climb up the edge of the city into the park and then wind through the trees before popping visitors out near hiking trails. From the scenic route it is possible to access Smith River for fishing and picnicking.

It is best to take a high clearance vehicle like a Jeep or modified SUV for better traction and ease. The road can be rather rough with mud and sand. Some of the rocks can be 6 inches in diameter one has to drive over or around to get through the route.
