Casa del Herrero

The Casa del Herrero has retained its original appearance longer than most historic buildings in the area. It was designed by George Washington Smith and is a part of the National Register of Historic Places and listed as a National Historic Landmark. The idea of this home was the work of George Fox Steedman and he assembled a group of architects, including Washington Smith, to design something palatial and impressive. From the furnishings to the building and exterior gardens, Fox Steedman played a role in the entire design process. The home was inhabited by a member of the Fox Steedman family until 1987when daughter Medora died. It was her son who formed the non-profit Casa del Herrero Foundation to preserve and protect the property. The home is set on 11-acres of land and today is operated as a museum. The Casa del Herrero Foundation intends to preserve " the house and grounds, as well as the family's collection of antiques, books, sketchbooks, drawings, and horticultural records." Tours of the grounds, gardens, home, and workshop are available with a reservation. The upkeep of the home is funded by a combination of grants, endowments, admission fees, memberships, fundraising events, and various rental properties.
