Good post.

Bordering their respective country's largest city. Both have acquired an unfair reputation for numerous reasons - Jersey Shore, The Only Way is Essex being the obvious ones, making the women of each look slutty and stupid and orange. Despite this, both are very affluent - among the most affluent in each country.

Surrey = Connecticut
Affluent areas where big city commuters reside to escape the city issues and to find cheaper housing (despite both having very expensive house prices). Both are seriously loaded with money, large houses and big cars.

Scotland = Washington
Both are famed for their mountainous scenery and wet weather. Seattle is similar to Edinburgh in the fact that they are both educated cities with high wages and are bounded by mountains and water. Seattle's strengths are in technology, Edinburgh's in finance.

Brighton = San Francisco
Cities both have reputations for having a lot of gay people, and both do! Both are very liberal and affluent with ridiculously expensive house prices and rents. Brighton is on the sea but is bounded by hills to the north, similar to how San Francisco is located next to the sea, but is very hilly.

Aberdeen = Anchorage
Similar size, similar wealth, similar scenery nearby, and both are located in areas that thrive on the oil industry, and these areas prosper because of it. Both easily dominate their immediate area.
Since we're doing countries I suppose for historical reasons Scotland could be comapred to the American South.

In both cases they were (re)united with the rest of the nation and some people are still not very happy about it and/or feel like the poor relatives. You could say they both have a chip on their shoulder/righteous grievances depending on your position.

Both are also subjected to a fair deal of snobbery/spite from the rest of the country.

Any city west of Chicago can't be compard with any Uk city. I really can't see how any city comparison can go outside London and New york city.

It surely is the New York of England. No doubt about that.

London is the England of New York.

Makes no sense at all, does it? London is London, New York is New York.
