We are considering retiring in western NC and really like Hendersonville and Fletcher. Any good or bad reviews about either from those who live there?
We live near Hendersonville and love it here. Hendersonville has a beautiful downtown area with quaint shops and restaurants. There are many wineries and breweries in the area. Additionally, it is known for apple production. If you like nature and mountains, you’ll love it here. Lots of retirees in WNC. Healthcare is ok for basic issues but not great. Overall, a great place to retire.
There's literally nothing in Fletcher....have you looked at places like Brevard, Spruce Pine or Waynesville? All are proper towns with services and decent healthcare options too.
Hendersonville has a lot to offer and is less than an hour from Asheville and Greenville/Spartanburg. It's a good retirement area. Fletcher is close enough to everything and also a good option. The main negative is temporary - the I-26 construction with traffic slowdowns. Once that work is completed, things should flow much more smoothly through the region.
The main negative here, relative to areas like Raleigh/Durham is medical care. It is fine till you need it. There aren’t a lot of specialists in the area. If you need a larger number of specialists, you’re going to have to go to Greenville,SC or Asheville. Maybe healthcare has deteriorated everywhere I don’t know. The Raleigh/Durham area is looking more and more appealing for the last stage of our lives.
We need to see a specialist today. It is impossible so off to Mission ER we go. No luck whatsoever in finding anyone.

I guess it depends on what you are coming from.
I hear these complaints about Mission all the time. My girlfriend had a six week stay there about fifteen years ago, raved about how good the care was then, and how bad it is now.
Looking at the metrics vs. my local area, Mission Hospital is far better than any hospital here. Specialists may not be as readily available as people want, but that's partly the consequence of a fairly small metro anywhere.
I moved all of my care to Asheville when I changed jobs last year.
All I can really attest to is that my PCP and sleep specialist are far more competent than any I've dealt with in my local area.

Decided to go to Advent in Hendersonville. Very pleased. Front office staff, nursing staff, and physicians were personable, efficient, and thorough.
