If anything, I think the Repubs would do a big FU to Kaine and the state of VA and send the FBI to MD. IF they had the power to do so. Which they really don't. It's up to the GSA.
Agreed.

This would seem to tip the balance toward MD, and Greenbelt specifically:

There are a lot of ignorant comments about Greenbelt in the comments section. People that tow the bash PG line no matter what neighborhood is mentioned.

This further solidifies Greenbelt as the favorite. It's the closest to a metro stop and you have I95, I495, and 295 access. And there's MARC. And you have a community that is ripe for development increasing the livability. There is already a new town home and apartment community being constructed.

295 will be even more of a parking lot than now, if that's possible.

So Landover has no shot, none. It "solidifies Greenbelt as the favorite" in your mind only.

Transportation to the new headquarters became a top concern for locals after the GSA dramatically increased parking requirements and failed to prioritize Metro access, over the objections of federal planning officials at the National Capital Planning Commission. The measure specifically requires the GSA to consider NCPC’s “recommendations on parking and proximity to Metro rail.

Another stipulation could dent the chances of the project moving to Springfield, where the site being considered is currently occupied by a secure CIA facility. Moving that would cost an estimated $210 million, and other site preparation to bring the FBI there would total $18 million, according to GSA estimates.

In June, Gov. Larry Hogan proposed at least $220 million in state funds if the GSA decides to locate the FBI headquarters in Maryland. This likely makes the state a more competitive location because Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe pledged $120 million for the Virginia site — $100 million less than Hogan pledged.

Additionally, Prince George's County has offered different amounts of funding depending on the headquarters' location. For Greenbelt, the county said it will fund a $97 million replacement parking garage, according to a June article in The Post. For Landover, the county will contribute $35 million toward a four-lane bridge and tunnel.
Potential Greenbelt FBI headquarters would bring nearly 11,000 jobs to PG County - The Diamondback

Because of the NEW criteria and the fact that Greenbelt is closest to metro than Landover and Springfield in addition to having a MARC station. Also, Maryland is throwing in $220 million, $100 million more than Springfield, in addition to PG county's $97 million, $62 million more than Landover.

It would cost the GSA $210 to relocate current facilities at the Springfield site. And Landover would be a crap shoot being so far from the metro where employees couldn't even walk if they wanted to.

Now, if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on the Greenbelt site all day every day given these recent updates. Landover was always third due to it being more than a mile from the metro.

Quote:
Many FBI employees ride mass transit to their offices on Pennsylvania Avenue today. It’s a safe guess, then, that many would ride Metro to Greenbelt. Fewer probably would ride to Landover Mall, which would require not only a trip to the Landover Metro station but then hopping on a shuttle bus for a 15-minute ride to work.

If most of the employees are used to taking the metro then improved highways and proximity to those highways is not going to be of interest to them. Same thing goes for the shuttle. 15 minutes is a lot of time to factor into a commute. Especially in the morning. Not to mention that time would increase due to accidents, weather, and the shuttle schedule. The other issue of shuttles is cost. Having shuttles for employees increases the total cost of ownership for the Agency which will have to be factored into their annual budget. Money that could be used for something else. From what I recall the Greenbelt location is right at the metro which would eliminate the need for shuttles. Either location would be a boon for the county but Greenbelt appears to be more ideal for employees using metro.

Greenbelt is the right place for FBI out of the three and it will be surprising if GSA selects a different site.

Especially after requiring proximity to metro. Saying you want to be next to metro and then picking the farthest location from metro out of the three sites is counter to their own requirements. IN addition, Springfield would be most expensive of the three as Virginia is only providing $120 million in funds with $210 million required to relocate current facilities to Maryland's $310 million combined for the Greenbelt site which is 50 yards from the metro entrance.
