Does anyone have any GOOD recommendations for affordable (ha, ha) apartments in Blacksburg, VA? My son will be pursuing his PhD there this coming fall. We've went searching this past week, but nothing is terribly impressive, and the reviews I have read have been terrible. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Many thanks!
GypsyJudy

It’s a crapshoot. You just have to be patient and diligent.
There’s stuff out there and a lot of it will have to do with timing.
Housing is in high demand and it’s very competitive. You may have to settle for the best of the worst.

When I went to college there (long time ago) I rented a space from a private homeowner. It was better than the apartment complexes although it also had some challenges.

I do recall there were quite a few homeowners who rented rooms out to students (especially grad students). You might look into something like that.

My son is graduating in May and I have found the Virginia Tech Parents FB page to be highly informative. There is a spreadsheet the admins created and keep up to date with apartment listings which should be helpful. Blacksburg is not cheap, but rents really run the gamit from reasonable to grossly over priced. There is also a techoffcampus.com your son can register to join.

Thanks for all of the input. THANKFULLY he found something yesterday- a house divided into multiple 1 bedroom/bath/kitchen units. Close to campus. I am so grateful because he was getting very nervous - as was I! It's going to be a big change to go to Blacksburg from a bigger city, but having a home will help. I am truly shocked at the quality of the available properties as well as the insane costs! The statement above regarding choosing the "best of the worst" is certainly on point, unfortunately! Thanks so much!
