I don't get this plan to buy the White Mill - which had its own bid for the casino - in order to convert it to housing for casino employees. Are the new jobs for Danville residents currently living there or are they going to be for people moving to the area specifically for casino work?

Danville was the subject of 2 lengthy articles in "The Atlantic" - a national magazine - in 2019. (This was before the casino was announced). The downtown residential population was almost nil a few years ago, and has increased considerably, with old industrial buildings converted into "Loft" apartments for bohemian types. A new YMCA fitness center opened a few years ago, very close to the planned casino site, (complete with a child nursery for people exercising) and is very popular with both the white and black population. It has reduced obesity and diabetes in the local population. A huge solar farm near town is bringing solar energy to municipal buildings and reducing energy costs.

Here in Bristol, virtually all businesses were for the casino. It passed roughly 2:1. There was some opposition from religious groups, but there was so much momentum behind it that I didn’t see it failing.
For whatever reason, they think the casino will put them out of business. A lot of them (especially on Piney Forest Road) had signs out front urging people to vote "No".

This was my thought process as well when this thread started. I've never been very impressed with Danville and the idea of a casino just reinforced my feelings. I don't know what the answer is but I doubt the casino is what they need.

I believe it. I would've already left long ago if I could. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm gonna be stuck here for the next few months, at the very least. I certainly would not recommend anyone to move here.

I doubt the casino will last. Danville isn't exactly business-friendly and a couple of years ago we had the highest municipal-owned utility rates in the state. I don't know if that's still the case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is. There used to be rumors that Danville gave industrial businesses a discount on utilities while jacking it up for residents. Whether there's any truth to it is anyone's guess, but that wouldn't shock me either.

The hype has begun! It breaks ground this December.
I certainly hope this works out for the area.
They are now saying that the casino hotel is to actually be bigger than originally planned.
I am still curious as to how they are going to develop the site (keeping the 3 smokestacks) vs what they are going to do about how the area flows down to the river.
The site sits on Main st high above the river just up from the water treatment plant.
They do mention building a second police station nearby.

Caesars has issued a RFP for construction of the casino. A general contractor is expected be picked by the end of January, with mobilization on the site beginning in the spring.

I'm all for an economy boost, but I would have voted against it. Gambling brings negatives. I would have much more liked to see a mini Busch Gardens for an example of an alternative.

But I'm curious, are people going there more for amusement or profit?

As if for profit, common sense clearly states as soon as you walk in the door, the odds are against you. They wouldn't be investing all that effort and money just to lose.

In economic terms, casinos transfer wealth; they don't create wealth, and individual ones don't bring general prosperity. As has been noted, it is not going to produce lots of jobs that pay well.
