Virginia, in my opinion, is the top of the south. Oklahoma, southern Missouri, Kentucky, southern WV and Virginia make up the northern most south.

I also consider Florida southern.

Culture alone does not dictate region. You must also consider history and location.

Citing Wikipedia...what sophisticated, hard-hitting analysis!

I could see NOVA being a mix of north and south, but it's hardly solidly northern. Why? In my opinion:
-No distinct accents
-No ethnic European enclaves, and consequently no ethnic European food scene
-Crappy commuter rail
-Few people are actually proud to call this area home
-Little blue collar presence
-No elitist liberal (barf) second home region (ie Cape Cod for Boston, the Hamptons for NYC)
-Old timers here are definitely Southern

I could go on and on, but I think it's incredibly ignorant to suddenly call a state that was once solidly southern to all of a sudden northern. I get that change happens, but just because a region becomes more urban and diverse doesn't suddenly turn a whole state from southern to northern.

Have you actually been in the city? So what if it has some statues meant for tourist. I don't even know what you're talking about with those "southern homes", as those homes are much similar to what you find in mid-atlantic cities such as DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and NYC. They're nothing like what you'd find in a place like Charleston or New Orleans.

^^ The architecture of RVA is about as southern as it is crappy, and I've gotta say that we have some pretty awesome stuff here in Richmond. Seriously, how are brownstones, are attached row houses southern. I swear, some of our neighborhoods could be in New York, or even Boston!

Probably so. I have never spent any longer amount of times in MD and Penn.

When people have portraits of confederate Generals on the wall (and in their bathroom???), I find it kind of southern :- )

In the bathroom? I've never seen that in Virginia...ever. But I did have a friend from Lancaster, PA when I lived in Philly who kept a bust of Robert E. Lee on his desk...kinda odd Just sayin..
