In addition to the states spencer114 pointed out, New York and New Jersey also grew commercial tobacco crops and many of those farms used enslaved labor to do it. Exported tobacco was a big source of cash during colonial times, but in later years the European market preferred the Tidewater-grown tobacco. Most of the northern states abolished slavery after the Revolutionary War but some states north of the Mason Dixon line legally retained slavery throughout the Civil War. It took the 13th Amendment to finally address that.

So, I guess your original statement should have been "If a state had tobacco plantations it's not NE. period. Except for the outliers of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts."

My section of MA was called Tobacco Valley. Tobacco was for cigars. They used high school and college kids to "work tobacco."

That's just for trivia but anyway, Virginia is NOT the northeast. Not northeast weather, nor attitudes and tastes. Especially the southern part of VA is either mid Atlantic or Southern. My nieces in Hampton Rds even talk about sweet tea (yuck) whatever that is.

I always can tell when I’m in the “south” when I have to say, “unsweetened with lemon” when ordering ice tea.

No part of PA has ever been in the Deep South.

The most popular and recognized symbol of the Confederacy came from Northern Virginia. Does that "explain a lot" also?

Respectfully, anyone who would state this.. is willfully ignoring American history. It's really about a bigoted effort to erase the South.

Why agree with such a plainly erroneous assertion?

Safe for me to say VA is a northeast state. Only NOVA is in the NE corridor, but the rest is jus like the outer Northeast.

The question is if West Virginia is Northeast as well. Heck, should Kentucky be midwestern?

Also considering how vast the South is stretching from the Atlantic to El Paso, Why is the Northeast broken off from the Midwest. Shouldn’t it all just be the “North”?

We’d have three regions. West, North and South.
We are a very, very unique version of South. All 50 states are unique to some degree, but there's a level of southern character that ties mist states, that is absent in Virginia. It's a light southern style, but it's still the South...

Most large Virginia cities have more interchange with Northeast cities, though...

Also, I consider the Midwest and Northeast as a combined "The North" region. And El Paso definitely isn't the South...

Haven’t read all the comments but did anyone point out “the Mason-Dixon line” as the original division?

This thread suggests that the newer terminology is simply based on business types and geography. For discussions, I like the term “mid Atlantic states” when appropriate.
